Guidelines, Requirements and General Information on the Philippine Society of Periodontology (PSP) Periodontics Basic Course Workshop:
1.Graduates of an accredited Pre-Doctoral Dentistry or Dental Hygienist Programs, may qualify to attend and participate in the Periodontics Basic Workshop Course. However, only PRC Board Certified dentists, with updated licenses, will be given access to patient treatment activities.
***Foreign students (Philippine university graduates) will only be allowed observer or assisting privileges during the clinical treatment activity.
***Faculty members interested to update themselves are welcome to join. A letter of invitation to the different dentistry institutions may be sent, in an effort for tuition fee subsidies to be provided for by the invited institutions. A Php10,000 discounted fee from tuition, per faculty participant, is applied.
2.The tuition fee is Php. 70k inclusive of the following course materials:
a. Course Outline and schedule.
b. Journal compilation references and lecture handouts.
c. Instrument set package e.g. :
Hu-Friedy - Probe, Universal scalers and curettes, mucoperiosteal elevator, sharpening stones.
Basic and surgical dental instruments – mouth mirror, cotton pliers, explorers, scalpel handle.
Instrument case (resin).
***Scalpel blades, suture material, periodontal dressing will be provided for during laboratory activities.
c. Pig’s mandibles for the various laboratory activities.
d. Day’s meals and snacks.
*** A slot reservation fee of Php 5,000 is encouraged. This amount is deductible from the actual tuition fee at the time of reservation, for the corresponding workshop schedule.
3.The course requirement includes the handling of a live clinical case and is set midway and towards the end of the course schedule. Each participant must provide their own patient, to go through panel/ group case presentation activities on diagnosis, prognosis and treatment planning, culminating with the actual treatment procedure, either non-surgical or surgical therapy, of at least one quadrant, on their patients.
***It is suggested for the participant to present their prospective clinical cases for early approval for enhanced preparation of case presentations.
4.Attendance is a must. Absences are strongly discouraged, as the society reserves the right to withhold issuing of Certificates of Attendance to participants who present with participation, clinical presentation, and clinical treatment activity shortcomings.
***If absences are unavoidable, the participant must make an effort to keep up with missed days:
a. Missed a minimum of 2 lecture topics – must attend the next scheduled workshop for missed
topics.
b. Missed a minimum of one lecture day – must re-attend the whole next scheduled workshop.
Clinical case presentation may be deferred; but may stay on the duration of the course without
receiving the certificate of completion.
c. Missed case presentation activity (either hypothetical case only or actual case only or both) –
must be scheduled with a panel of at least 3 PSP mentors before actual clinical treatment
activity can proceed. But participant must have NO ABSENCES with any lecture days.
d. Missed actual clinical treatment activity – must be scheduled with the next scheduled workshop.
Participant is welcome to refresh themselves with the lectures.
*** The participant is encouraged to follow the course’s predetermined schedule of activities, readings and responsibilities expected of each schedule day.
5.Full payment for the basic workshop course MUST HAVE BEEN COMPLETED BY THE FIRST DAY OF WORKSHOP COMMENCEMENT.
***Payment schedules may be made months and days before, leading to full tuition payment, by the first day of workshop commencement.

6.Participants will be awarded a Certificate of Attendance for a Continuing Education Course with corresponding CE credits, as prescribed by the Philippine Regulation Commission, Board of Dentistry. And upon satisfactory completion of the course, will be granted the status of Affiliate Member of the Philippine Society of Periodontology, which provides for continuing education seminars, workshops and annual conferences for as long as member maintains his/her updated membership status.
Affiliate membership status provides for a pathway to upgrading to ACTIVE MEMBER status, upon presentation of 5 cases before the PSP Board Panel.
